It always gives me pleasure to see my son show some interest
in the shop. The other day he decided he needed drum sticks, and wanted
to make some... now!
We didn't have any plans for this, I really didn't expect
this to get as far as we did. So..... |

.....we slipped a 3/8" dowel in the chuck and stuffed
the other end into the tail stock and off we went! He was a bit timid at
first, especially when I made him take off his baggy shirt and chain. Safety
first! In this pic he's using the gouge, I only briefly showed him how
i work, (i'm a total novice at the lathe). He seemed to have an eye
for where he needed to remove stock for the taper. |

These aren't John's hands, or his project, but this is
how he smoothed out his drum sticks. John had great patience with this
project. He just had to get close to the shape he wanted, and this home
made sanding block evened it up for him. |

Of course now he's very proud of himself! And now I get to
listen to him drumming, on everything! Hmmmmm.....Maybe this wasn't such a good
idea!?! Mom's not too happy with me either! |
