Oak Podium
6/01
I recently received a request to build a portable work station for a local super market. Something along the lines of a small desk on a pedestal.
The pic at left is of the three sides. Not glued up yet, just to see what it looks like. Splines fit into 1/8" slots routed in the edge of the side styles and the back of the front styles.
For help cutting your rails and styles, look here.
I had no plans for the podium, but I used the plans for a pedestal found in the 3/98 issue of WOOD Magazine. I widened the front, added a desk top, and threw some wheels under it and voila!

90 Degree Corner Clamps

As you can see in the photos to the left, all the panels have been finished prior to assembly. This is so when the panels expand and contract, there will be no tell-tale "unfinished border" around each panel.

Here the floor, wheels, weights (twenty pounds) and base trim are all installed. A view of the back shows the ballast between the bottom and the bottom shelf.

If your interested in making one of these, you'll need the plans for the pedestal. Also you'll need my rough notes, they will give you the rail and style lenghts, and dimensions of the desktop:
