This little project is an inexpensive way to break into "Wood Turning", and you can reward yourself with your first hand made tool for your shop! The 4 in 1 Screw Driver! With any lathe project, it's best to start with a well prepared hunk of wood. The pic at left is my v-block, just an old piece of 2x3 with two 45degree cuts to form a V. This will hold your turning stock firmly at 45 degrees. You'll also find many other uses for it. Maybe this is your first hand made shop tool? Note the slots for the band saw blade? Those slots allow you to knock off the corners of your turning blank with relative safety I don't like doing this on the table saw because my fingers are just too close for the blade, & I prefer to keep them attached to my hands. You don't have to be overly precise here, your only removing waste stock here, just be careful not to remove too much stock. Your V-block will also hold your stock so you can cut two shallow kerfs for spurs of your lathe's live center to engage the stock. But before doing either of these steps, I always find the center of each end of my turning stock by drawing lines corner to corner. One end will be the guide to make these kerf cuts, the other will find the end for the dead center.

This project requires a 5/8" hole drilled in the end to acept the screwdriver kit. The hole is drilled at the other end opposite the kerf cuts.  Oh yeah your also going to need a chuck to fit in your lathe, or you can drill it out on your drill press. I prefer to do it on the lathe, because the hole will be pefectly aligned down the center of the stock.  This type of drilling is a little different, because the drill doesn't move into the stock, you use the tail stock to push your turning blank into the drill.  Just like with a drill press, you would never hold the stock with your hands, the same is true here. You can see I have a wooden clamp on the stock, and I let the handle rest against the bed of the lathe. This will keep the stock from spinning out of controll and mangeling your fingers! Ok, finally the fun begins! Pull out your favorite gouge and let the chips fly!  Turn your blank to a nice cylindar, just a bit wider then your intended diameter.

The first step is to make the tennon at the hole end for the brass ferrel. This needs to be a "Press Fit"  Oh now doesn't that look nice! Now I start to shape the handle. I like a little something to push on, so i start with a raised lip above the ferrel. You can shape the handle anyway you like, just remember you have a big hole down the middle of this thing.... don't go too deep!

I'm using Watco Danish oil finish for my screwdriver. It takes many coats of the stuff, so I tried something a little different, I slowed my lathe down to 350 rpms and applied the oil with a rag... instant beauty!The wood soaks up the oil so I keep applying it, with a little pressure to heat up the pores and force them to accept the oil deeper into the wood.  I let this dry over nite and reapeated the process the next morning and evening.  Now pull out your V-block and trim off the waste with a hack saw or your band saw. Then I head over to the disk sander to sand down the nub. Becarefull, just light pressure here, you don't want to flatten the end of your handle. Next, I mounted my chuck back in the lathe, and fit my 5/8" bit once again to the chuck. Then I slid the handle back over the bit so I could sand the end of the handle, and then finish the entire handle.  Sorry I didn't get a pic of this last step.
